“สุวรรณี  สารคณา หรือ สไบ ผู้มีความสามารถถ่ายทอดทางศิลปกรรม” เป็นทัศนของครูอาจารย์และผู้รักชอบงานศิลปะกล่าวถึงเธอเมื่อได้เห็นผลงานจิตรกรรมที่สร้างสรรค์ขึ้น

ถ้าต้องการทราบเหตุผลดังกล่าว คงต้องย้อนไปดูผลงานที่ทำขึ้นในช่วงปี  พ.ศ. 2537-2541 ซึ่งเป็นช่วงที่สไบศึกษาหาข้อมูลจากธรรมชาติ และใช้การมองเห็นด้วยตาถูกถ่ายทอดอารมณ์และความรู้สึกภายในใจ ความสามารพิเศษอีกประการหนึ่งคือทักษะของมือที่วาดนั้นเคลื่อนไหวร่วมกับพู่กันและฝีแปรงอย่างมีชีวิตชีวาทำให้รูป (Image) ร่องรอย (Brushstroke) และพลังของอารมณ์ (Emotion) ปรากฏออกมาในงานจิตรกรรมอย่างน่าพิศวง ซึ่งถือเป็นเรื่องสำคัญในงานจิตรกรรม ดังเห็นได้ในงานจิตรกรรมของศิลปินที่มีฝีมือยอดเยี่ยมอย่าง Francisco de Goya, Rembrandt หรือศิลปินในยุคอิมเพรสชั่นนิสต์อย่าง Vincent Vangogh และ Claude Monet เป็นต้น  ปรมาจารย์ศิลปินเหล่านี้ ล้วนมีฝีแปรงและความเคลื่อนไหวที่ปาดป้ายงานจิตรกรรมของเขาออกมาอย่างวิจิตร พิสดาร แฝงด้วยพลังอารมณ์ภายในได้อย่างดงาม

แรงบันดาลใจจากชีวิตผู้คน สังคม และความเห็นอกเห็นใจเป็นเรื่องในใจของสไบ ที่ก่อให้เกิดรูปชีวิตขึ้นภายในใจ ที่เธอกล่าวว่า “ เรื่องของวัยชราเป็นเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับคนชราในชนบท ถูกทอดทิ้งให้มีความเป็นอยู่อย่างยากลำบากเพียงลำพัง” ความเห็นของสไบอีกประการเมื่อได้ใช้ชีวิตในเมืองก็คือ“ทัศนะที่มีต่อชีวิตประจำวันของคนเมืองที่มีการต่อสู้ดิ้นรน เหน็ดเหนื่อยสับสนกับสภาวะเหตุการณ์ต่างๆที่มีความซับซ้อนในแต่ละวัน

สไบสร้างสรรค์งานจิตรกรรมด้วยรูปทรงที่สะท้อนทัศนะของความคิดที่งดงาม ศิลปินพร้อมที่จะแบ่งปันน้ำใจให้แก่สังคมและทุกๆชีวิต น่าจะกล่าวได้ว่า นี่คือศิลปะแห่งคุณธรรม ซึ่งน้อยนักที่ผู้คนในสังคมจะมีให้แก่กันและกัน ผลงานของสไบจึงแสดงออกถึงความสะอาด บริสุทธิ์ ไร้การปรุงแต่งที่มากเกินพอ เราจึงเห็นผลงานจิตรกรรมที่สะท้อนบุคลิกของศิลปินได้ชัดเจนขึ้น

ความสะเทือนใจจากชีวิตส่วนตัว เป็นอีกเหตุผลที่ทำให้งานสร้างสรรค์ของเธอผสมผสานกลิ่นอายของอารมณ์และบรรยากาศแห่งวิถีชีวิตชนบท-อดีตของความสะเทือนใจ ผลงานที่แสดงออกใต้ฝีแปรงที่เคลื่อนไหว มีพลัง แฝงเร้นด้วยความเงียบ มีความหวังให้ทุกๆอย่าง ย้อนกลับมามีความสุขตามความหมายลึกๆในใจของเธอ

ครอบครัว ความรัก ความอบอุ่น ที่เกิดขึ้นใหม่ เป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้การสร้างสรรค์ช่วงนี้เปลี่ยนแปลงไป ผลงานที่แสดงออกถึงความเศร้า รันทดต่อสภาพสังคม วิถีชีวิตผู้คน และชีวิตในครอบครัวแห่งอดีต ค่อยๆผ่อนคลายลงไปชีวิตใหม่ที่เปี่ยมด้วยความรักหล่อหลอมสไบให้เกิดพลังใจในการถ่ายทอดงานจิตรกรรมที่แสดงออกถึงสิ่งที่ซ่อนลึกอยู่ภายในใจ ถูกสร้างรูปขึ้นมาใหม่

การสร้างงานจิตรกรรมภายหลังนี้ สไบทุ่มเทชีวิตให้กับลูกและสามี ช่วงเวลาเหล่านี้ได้หล่อหลอมความคิดและอารมณ์จนตกผลึก เป็นแรงขับเคลื่อนสำคัญต่องานชุด “รักของครอบครัว” ในฐานะครูและผู้ติดตามงานศิลปะของสไบ มีความหวังว่าแนวทางของความรักของครอบครัว เป็นพลังในการขับเคลื่อนให้ศิลปินสร้างสรรค์ผลงาน สิ่งสำคัญที่ต้องหลอมรวมเข้ากับตัวศิลปินให้ได้ก็คือ พลังอันบริสุทธิ์และรสชาติแห่งสุนทรีย์ ของวิถีแห่งจิตรกรรมของศิลปินนั่นเอง

Suwannee’s Paintings

Suwannee “Sabai” Sarakana paints in a style that is both expressionistic and impressionistic.  This is what teachers and art lovers know, recognize, and talk about when they see her paintings.

     If we want to know the reason why they say and think like that, we must first review her previous paintings from the years 1997-2000. It is in that period that Suwannee painted nature. She looked at nature and painted expressively, emotionally, from her heart. Suwannee’s special skill was the unique use of her hands to hold the paintbrush in a swinging manner that was especially expressive, thus creating lively images and textures by the brushstrokes. It wonderfully expressed the power of emotion.  Brushstrokes and their corresponding emotions are, of course, important, just as we see in the paintings of old masters like Francis de Goya, Rembrandt and impressionist artists such as Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet. These masters have excellent brushstrokes that created impressive emotional movement in their paintings.

     Suwannee’s previous painting series were inspired by society and people’s lives with whom she was involved.  Her artistic imagination expressed her concern for others. One such example is the series of paintings “The Life of the Elders.”  Suwannee’s love and care for our old people who live alone, isolated in villages, is obvious. The painting series “City Life” reveals Suwannee’s emotions about living in a cosmopolitan city. The City Life paintings show the ennui and confusion of the complications inherent in living in a large city.  Thus, Suwannee created her paintings to expose her emotions of love and compassion for the care of other people and insight into their individual lives.  It is the beauty of a good heart. There are not many artists like this who express this love and compassion for others. Suwannee’s paintings show that innocence, purity, and sincerity can be real rather than feigned. This is Suwannee’s character that we see here.

     The deeply moving inspirations from her personal life is the main reason that Suwannee created her art, especially the inspiration from the life of the village where she came from. As a result, her paintings mix views of the countryside with an emotional nostalgia for the past. The brushstrokes and resulting movement express this quietly, without ostentation.  It seems that in these previous series of paintings that the artist hopes to return to the past to find happiness, yet is aware that this is no longer possible in this contemporary world.

     This latest series of paintings, in this exhibition, “The Family, Love and Warm Arms” takes a different perspective. This series morphs from a gentle nostalgia for the past to a happier, more optimistic view that love can transcend life’s difficulties.  This new energy is exemplified by the paintings such as those of her husband and their child. She shows here that her life is focused on love of family.

     I am one Suwannee’s former teachers and now art follower. I know that her love of her family will continue to push her to new artistic endeavors and insights. It is most important that an artist combine sincerity with aesthetics:  that is the way of Suwannee.
